The Bible is the most universally recognised book in the world. It forms part of Holy Scripture for three of the world’s major religions, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. The Bible is both reverenced and despised. Most people have heard some of the stories in the Bible. Adam and Eve, Noah’s ark, David and Goliath, Moses and the ten plagues of Egypt, the birth of Jesus (the Christmas story), and the crucifixion of Jesus (the Easter story). Some of these biblical stories have formed the bases of Hollywood blockbuster movies, although often without authenticity to the original plotline. There is no doubt that the Bible is a unique book. The Bible is a collection of 66 books written by dozens of authors in three languages, Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek. In total, six hundred thousand words form the Bible. The Bible is divided into two parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament was written between 1200 and 165 BC and consists of 39 books: the original Hebrew Bible, the sacred scriptures of the Jewish faith. The New Testament was written in the first century AD and consists of 27 books written in Greek, the international language during the New Testament era. The Bible was penned on three continents. The authors were kings, fishermen, tax collectors, farmers, soldiers, princes, doctors, tent makers and diplomats, to name a few. No other book is consistently the world’s number one bestseller. It sits in a drawer in most hotel rooms around the world. It has been translated into thousands of languages and dialects.
